How to Make a GIF with GPT Image 2.6
Updated November 5, 2026 · 5 min read
GPT Image 2.6 can turn a prompt, a sketch or a still image into a short looping GIF. Getting a smooth loop is mostly about how you describe the motion. Here is the structure we use, the sprite-sheet trick from OpenAI's own examples, and four prompts you can copy.
The Prompt Structure for Smooth Loops
- Format: start with "Create an animated looping GIF".
- Subject: who or what moves, with a clear look (3D toy, pixel art, flat cartoon, product photo).
- Motion as a sequence: "waves hello, then gives a little bounce" — two or three beats, not a story.
- Stage: a plain or simple background and a fixed camera.
- Loop: ask for a seamless loop so the last frame flows into the first.
The Sprite-Sheet Technique
OpenAI's launch examples, created with OpenArt, use a precise variant: ask for a single animation sprite sheet with an exact number of frames in a grid, then play it as a GIF. The key phrases are:
Create a single animation sprite sheet for a seamless looping GIF. … Exactly 6 sequential frames arranged in a precise 3-column by 2-row grid, read left-to-right then top-to-bottom. Every panel has identical dimensions. Fixed front three-quarter camera, same character, same background. Sixth frame transitions smoothly toward the first. No captions, no borders, no gutters.Fixing the grid, the camera and the character in every panel is what keeps the animation from flickering between frames.
4 Tested GIF Prompts
Robot mascot wave
A friendly round blue robot mascot waves hello and bounces — clean 3D toy style on a light-gray background. See the output and full prompt.
Pixel-art cat on a snowy night
A 16-bit cat swishes its tail on a windowsill while snow falls outside. See the output and full prompt.
Shiba happy-dance sticker
A chubby shiba inu hops with star eyes — thick outlines that read well at sticker size. See the output and full prompt.
Sneaker 360° product loop
A running sneaker floats and rotates above a soft shadow for ads and shop pages. See the output and full prompt.
Common Problems and Fixes
- The character changes between frames: repeat "same character, same outfit, same background" and fix the camera angle.
- The loop jumps at the end: say that the last frame should transition smoothly back to the first.
- Too much happens: cut the motion to two or three beats; GIFs are short.
- Large file size: use a plain background and fewer colors.
